As usual, hello from the ENnies!

Next Friday, July 24, is a very important day in the life of the ENnies. First, it’s the day the polls open so the fans can vote for their favorite nominees. If you haven’t been there yet, make sure you visit the ENnies site to see the list:

http://www.ennie-awards.com/nominations/nominees.asp

Second, next Friday is the day that fans can also throw their hats into the ring and can register to officially run for a position as a 2010 ENnies judge.

If you are thinking about running, here is the criteria you’ll need to remember. All judges must:

be at least 18 years of age as of August 14th, 2009 and able to enter into a legal contract;

not have any professional relationship with any RPG publisher during the period from January 1st, 2008 to August 1st, 2010. Such relationships include unpaid work and work on free products;

declare any relationship with any publisher (including EN Publishing, except for the Ceramic DM line) in which they receive money, product, or special consideration in exchange for their services;

be able to read English and communicate clearly therein.

If you have a relationship any with a publisher, even as a playtester, it is important that you notify the ENnies board of this so that they may determine whether you are eligible to seek a judge position. In cases of rule violation, conflict of interest, misrepresentation or other factor(s) detrimental to the awards, the Board of Directors retains the right to alter the composition of the judging panel at any time.

Physical location is irrelevant- so long as you can accept packages year-round.

When you apply, you will be expected to fill out a questionnaire to help people best gauge how well they think you’ll work as a judge. Here a couple of sample questions:

What styles and genres of RPGs do you enjoy most? Are there any styles or genres that you do not enjoy? Which games best exemplify what you like? Do you consider yourself a particular system’s, publisher’s or genre’s “fanboy/girl”?

How would you like to see the ENnies change (categories, policies, etc)? What should remain inviolate?

If you want to run, here is what is expected of you. All judges shall:

access the ENnie Awards boards/e-mailing lists (for the purposes of corresponding with judges and interacting with directors and staff);

weekly on the designated ENnies forums and sharing an accurate list of what products they have received;

daily on the designated ENnies forums during judge deliberations (expected dates for 2010: June 19 – July 11)

act in a professional and impartial manner;

sign a non-disclosure agreement;

in the event that they are removed from office, bear the expense of returning and/or forwarding the products received for review;

pay any customs duties charged for submissions;

if they attend Gen Con – Indy, work a minimum of two hours at the ENnies booth

if they attend Gen Con – Indy, attend the awards ceremony smartly attired.

report to the Submissions Coordinator and Business Manager.

And, besides being able to say “I’m an ENnies Judge!” what else do you get?

upon completion of reviewing, retain for personal use or otherwise dispose of products reviewed;

receive a free Gen Con Indy 4-day pass.

Hopefully this whets your appetite and pushes you over the edge to applying to be a judge. I’ll be back next week with links to the actual form.

Once again, if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. You can either reply here or e-mail me directly at pr@ennieawards.com.

So the ENnie nominations have been announced and, once again, there is talk, both positive and negative, running across the internet. For the folks who have negative comments, I submit the following proposal: Run to be an 2010 ENnies Judge and change the things you don’t like. Every year, volunteers are elected by the RPG community to be their voice in the ENnies. This year, it could be you. The campaigning officially starts next Friday, June 24th, and information will be posted here and elsewhere on how to nominate yourself. Then you’ll be free to campaign across the intertubes and tell people to vote for you the week of August 2nd.

So let your voice be heard and, if you don’t like the way things are run, campaign to change those things. If enough people agree with your message, you’ll become part of the process.

And just to give you an idea of what’s expected, here’s the thread on EN World from last year: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/236438-2009-ennies-judge-selection.html

As you know, the window for submissions has closed. The judges now face the difficult task of picking which products out of the plethora of received material deserve to be nominated. It’s a daunting task, to say the least.

One of the judges, Jeramy Ware, has done an excellent job of listing products that have been submitted. If you wish to see what your favorite company/website submitted, visit this link.

Eventually, the fans will be presented with a list of nominees and can make their voices heard. They will also have the ability to nominate their favorite publishers for the “Fan’s Choice for Best Publisher” ENnie.

We are looking for good people volunteer their time at the ENnies booth. We would like two people to work each shift and as many as want to help tear down the booth. When scheduling your time, please plan to show up 10 minutes before it starts.

Each volunteer should be ready to answer questions from passers-by about EN World and the ENnies. There will be a book at the booth with information such as when the ENnies ceremony will be held, the names of each judge, who the nominees are, etc. Also, some publishers may drop off materials for next years ENnies, so the volunteers will be required to have the publisher fill out a form and give the publisher a receipt. You also have to make sure nothing is taken from the booth, especially on Saturday and Sunday, after the ENnie winners are announced Friday night.

Oh, did I mention the swag bag given to each volunteer?

This year, I have volunteered to work as the ENnies PR Representative, amongst other positions, to help answer questions people have about the ENnies as well as letting people know what’s happening on the judges and coordinators side of things.

As you well know, GenCon is right around the corner! And, of course, GenCon is where the ceremony for the ENnie Awards, the annual fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop roleplaying gaming, is held. For more information about the ENnies, feel free to visit the official ENnies website.

This year, we have five outstanding judges who have volunteered their time and efforts to make this 9th ENnie Awards a success. I cannot stress enough how time-consuming being a judge is and must commend each judge for donating his or her efforts to keep the RPG industry as fan-centered as it truly is.

Gertie Barden (Xath) – The ENnie Awards — Gertie Barden
Gertie has been gaming since high school and never sees herself stopping. She has been working with the ENnies for three years now, and debuted as a judge in the 2008 season.

Kennon Bauman (The Universe) – The ENnie Awards — Kennon Bauman
My love of games and gaming was born when I first saw an ad for D&D on the back of a comic book. It wasn’t until years later, when introduced to WEGs d6 Star Wars, that I really learned to roll the dice.

Chris Gath (Crothian) – The ENnie Awards — Chris Gath
I have been a Judge five times and a RPG reviewer for seven years. I promise to treat books equally and not be swayed by flashy colored books or perfect looking hard bounds. I look at each category and judge a book then solely on those merits.

Jody Kline (Rodrigo Istalindir) – The ENnie Awards — Jody Kline
A gamer for over a quarter of a century and a self-confessed systems-junkie, I have yet to meet a game I wouldn’t play once. Except for one that shall remain nameless, but you can guess what it is. My philosophy is “It’s the players, not the game.”

Jeramy Ware (Master of the Game) – The ENnie Awards — Jeramy Ware
A gamer for 25 years, I served as a judge in 2007, receiving praise from publishers, fans, and other judges for my work and my blog documenting the process. I’ll dedicate my group of experienced players to judge as much as we can through actual play.

The actual judging of products has not started but will very soon. How soon, you may ask? That would be as soon as tomorrow. That’s right, the date for submissions ends today (June 1, 2009)! If you have not submitted your product yet, you need to get it out the door and get the entry form to Hans Cummings, the Submissions Coordinator, as soon as possible. For more information, visit The ENnie Awards — How To Enter.

Starting tomorrow, here is the order of events for what happens next:

Once the judges have evaluated the plethora of playable products, they will each submit a list of nominations.

That will eventually be pared down to the final list of nominees upon which the fans will vote.

Before they are announced, though, the fans will be asked to submit nominations for Best Publisher.

Once those nominations are in, all of the nominees will be announced on the official ENnie Awards website.

Two weeks later, the polls will be opened to the fans. One week later, they will close and the votes will be tallied.

The winners will be announced at GenCon during the ceremony on the evening of Friday, August 14th.

That’s it for now. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. You can either comment here or e-mail me directly at pr@ennieawards.com. Thanks for all your support and I look forward to answering any questions I receive.

With GenCon only a few months away, I got a little nostalgic. Last year, I took a lot of pictures at GenCon but, for me, this one is by far my favorite.

Click for a larger image

There are three reasons I love this picture.

1. The man at the podium is none other than Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of D&D. He was being presented, appropriately enough, with a lifetime achievement award at the Ennies.

2. The picture is a great image of gaming’s “old guard” and gaming’s “new guard.” I always appreciate the older generation helping the younger generation into the genre.

3. This is my most personal reason: The little boy holding the plaque that he would eventually give to Mr. Arneson is none other than my son. He’s six and already loves to game. I know that he will look back on this picture when he’s older and appreciate that he was able to meet the man who, along with Gary Gygax, gave us so much enjoyment.

So for all of you out there I say this: Teach the youth to play! Show them what it means to game and let them pass it down to their own kids. Keep gaming alive!

Yesterday, Zachary Houghton resigned as a judge from the ENnies. He did so publicly rather than privately. I disagree with his choice of venue but what’s done is done. The ENnies coordinators have responded to his post on their page and I encourage you to read both and draw your own conclusions.

My post today is not meant to further the flames on either side of the ENnies aisle but rather to start a dialogue on something that I have been thinking about for at least the last three years. Is the ENnies, in its current form, as fair as it could be to small publishers? Is putting a big publisher in the same category as a small pubsliher and allowing for fans to vote on giving the small publisher a chance at winning?

To answer this, I did a bit of research. I went to the ENnies site and looked at all award winners from the first year, 2001, to the current year, 2008. I used the following categories which were essentially the same from year to year:

Best Cover Art

Best Interior Art

Best Production Values

Best Writing

Best Rules

Best Cartography

Best Adventure

Best Setting

Best Supplement

Best Electronic Book

Best Game

Best d20/OGL Product

Product of the Year (started in 2006)

I thought 13 categories would give me a good base for testing and the categories I chose I considered the most prestigious, although any ENnie award in any category is prestigious. I then listed both the Gold and Silver winners for each year except for 2001 and 2002, which only had Gold winners. The following list is of all the winners and the number of times they have won.

Wizards of the Coast – 11

In order to test my theory, I picked companies that I considered to be “big publishers.” Some were fairly obvious to me.

Malhavoc Press

Margaret Weiss Productions

Sovereign press (also partially owned my Margaret Weiss)

Green Ronin Publishing,

Paizo Publishing

White Wolf Publishing

Wizards of the Coast

Some were not so obvious.

AEG (Legends of the 5 Rings)

Black Industries (Warhammer)

FFG (Grimm, Heresy, Game of Thrones, etc.)

Hero Games (Hero System, Champions)

Kenzer & Co. (Aces & Eights, Kalamar, etc.)

Mongoose Publishing (Babylon 5, Conan, etc.)

Privateer Press (Iron Kingdoms, etc.)

I see these as “big publishers” because they have the resources to produce multiple hardback books that line the shelves of my FLGS.

Using these numbers, the big publishers win 77.143% of the time. Even if you don’t include the second batch of companies, the big publishers win 57.857% of the time.

To me, the numbers don’t lie. When fans are given the choice of voting, they will pick the products from companies they are more familiar with over three-quarters of the time. To me, that is unfair to the small publishers; the guys who don’t have the resources to put out multiple books over the year or ship multiple copies to FLGS’ throughout the country.

Now bear in mind, I realize how much of an honor it is to be nominated for an ENnie and I realize that, for some small publishers, being nominated gives them more press than they would garner otherwise, but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that these companies have a slim-to-none chance of actually winning. You think being nominated will increase the number of folks willing to look at your products? Imagine what actually winning an ENnie could do for you.

I have also been told that not putting the small publishers in the same category as the big publishers would be an “insult” to the small publishers. It would be as if it was thought that they “couldn’t hang with the big boys.” I disagree. I think it is more insulting to put them in a category against someone whose odds of winning are statistically much, much greater than their own.

As a solution, I submit that the ENnies have some separate categories for both big and small publishers. Look at the number of books sold or shipped to stores to determine what makes a big publisher and what makes a small publisher. I don’t know if that method of distinction would work in the long run, but it’s a start.

Before I finish, I would like to make clear that I have nothing but the upmost respect for the coordinators of the ENnies, from the judges all the way up the ladder to the Business Manager. They do a great job getting the ENnies out there each year and deserve nothing but kudos for it. I simply think that the way it is set up currently is not as fair to small publisher as it could be.

So what do you think? Do you think the ENnies could be more fair to small publisher or do you think it works fine just the way it is?

Fire and Brimstone is a free PDF that originated last year at GenCon. Corey Reid and friends were discussing the rules and how complicated they had become. For example, falling into lava meant rolling 20d6′s for damage and required saving throws. They decided to make it simple; if you fall into lava, you die. No save.

After GenCon, I decided that we should create a PDF supplement and release it for free. With the help of Corey, and Deb Balsam from Dog Soul Publishing, we created Fire and Brimstone! (The Comprehensive Guide to Lava, Magma and Superheated Rock). We found a publisher in Expeditious Retreat Press and released it on November 23, 2007. It was an instant hit.

Keeping F&B in the public eye was not difficult. We released banners for people to insert on webpages and in their signatures on message boards. If you want a copy for yourself, feel free to copy and paste the images below. Make sure to link them to the official F&B web page.

Today, the 2008 nominations for the ENnie Awards were posted. F&B has been nominated for “Best Free Product or Webhancement”. I am extremely excited about this and it is nice to be validated by my peers. I urge everyone to vote starting on July 21st. Let’s win that award!
