Is this the future of your gaming table?

This is utterly and absolutely brilliant.

This demo — from Pattie Maes’ lab at MIT, spearheaded by Pranav Mistry — was the buzz of TED. It’s a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment. Imagine “Minority Report” and then some.

This technology is something that I can picture every gamer buying into it when it becomes more mainstream. Short term, it would get rid of the need to haul dozens of books to and from the gaming table. Long term, this will allow you to game anywhere at anytime using apps like OpenRPG or Fantasy Grounds. As Scotty would say, “I like this [future]. It’s exciting!”

Well, wow. I’m pretty amazed at how simple this tech appears to be and how futuristic it feels.

Heh, and tag clouds for the people you meet? Funny. Thanks for posting this—I’m going to share.

While very cool, I don’t see this is a huge technological leap from portable technologies already in existence. In fact the use of common, inexpensive gadgets to create this prototype speaks to that. Palm pilots, handheld computers, gesture recognition and handwriting recognition, even the wii’s use of IR sensors are all steps towards an integrated technological life experience. None of these are new, what is interesting here is the combination of these not for use at a desk, but as one walks.
