My favorite picture from GenCon 2008
With GenCon only a few months away, I got a little nostalgic. Last year, I took a lot of pictures at GenCon but, for me, this one is by far my favorite.
There are three reasons I love this picture.
1. The man at the podium is none other than Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of D&D. He was being presented, appropriately enough, with a lifetime achievement award at the Ennies.
2. The picture is a great image of gaming’s “old guard” and gaming’s “new guard.” I always appreciate the older generation helping the younger generation into the genre.
3. This is my most personal reason: The little boy holding the plaque that he would eventually give to Mr. Arneson is none other than my son. He’s six and already loves to game. I know that he will look back on this picture when he’s older and appreciate that he was able to meet the man who, along with Gary Gygax, gave us so much enjoyment.
So for all of you out there I say this: Teach the youth to play! Show them what it means to game and let them pass it down to their own kids. Keep gaming alive!

Same here and it must be really cool to have your son met the man himself. This is probably a chance that I will never get in my lifetime. I’ve already missed Gygax.
