Picture This: In search of the perfect character portrait

You’ve just created your dwarf cleric. His attributes are primed. His equipment is second-to-none. His background is detailed and intense. You can’t wait to play him. Now all you have to do is find that perfect character portrait to show the world exactly what he looks like and how bad-ass he truly is. So what now? Google? Input “dwarf cleric” and see what happens? Oh no, my friends. Let me show you the way.

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of websites out there that specialize in art. However, a lot of them, well, suck. But that’s where I come in. Here are some really good websites that specialize in fantasy art and examples of what you’ll find at each. (Thanks to my wife for most of the links!)

Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo

You can’t go wrong with the mistress and master of fantasy artwork. If you’re looking for ripplingly-muscled men and scantily clad women, this is the site for you.

Claudio Pozas

I would be seriously remiss if I didn’t mention my friend Claudio. You’ve seen his art a lot lately and he did the cover work for Fire and Brimstone!

@Tom – What are you talking about? You’re in there! ;)

Whoa — what a list! It’ll take me a while to check it all out.

I’ve found that DeviantART is a fun place to browse for fantasy art clips. I’ve searched for “gnolls” and “castle ruins” and had great luck — plus you get exposed to a lot of new up-and-coming artists.

@PatrickWR – A friend of mine presents his stuff on DeviantART. It’s definitely a great place for up and comers. :)

Cool art… I solicit artists to draw fantasy art set in the Hyborian Age (the age of Conan).. so I might give a few of these a shot for illustrating some nice brutal images of a harsh world.

I assume that if you’re just using it as a character portrait, you won’t get in much trouble. ;)

Crom November 12th, 2008 at 6:09 PM

@Reveal yeah, Vallejo has.. Sweet has also (well.. at least images set in the Hyborian Age.. not sure if Sweet has ever done Conan specifically).

There are some other artists up there that could give it a go though.

Google for Elfwood for some great character pix!

@GameDaddy – Why did I put a space between the two words?! ;)

I typically don’t get into the character portrait dilemma because most of my character inspiration comes from browsing danbooru or gelbooru or akibakko anyway, so I can just point at what inspired me and say “that!” You might blow it off for being anime, but you’d be surprised the badass fantasy art japanese artists produce in anime style.
