What I learned at GenCon

GenCon has come and gone and more wonderful memories have been made. Tonight, I will make a new video post on my experiences but, for this post, I thought I would give you my thoughts on the lessons I have learned.

There are two airlines upon which I try to fly nowadays; Midwest and Southwest. Of the two, I have found Midwest to be the least delayed and the best at communicating with their passengers as far as flight updates. And their cookies are awesome.

  • There is never enough time to do everything I want to do.

This is, sadly, too true. I was not able to attend the RPG Bloggers seminar on Saturday afternoon because of games that I had to attend. I spent a total of 15 minutes in the Dealer’s Hall. I did not get to see the D&D Insider Character Generator. I did a lot of things but I couldn’t do everything, unfortunately.

  • My friends are awesome.

They are some of the most intelligent, funny, witty, sweet, caring, and fun people I have ever met and I always wish I lived closer to them so I could ineract with them more often.

  • I’m not going to be able to talk to everyone.

Try as I might, I’m going to miss talking to people simply because of sheer numbers. Brian, for example, was someone I wanted to talk to but was only able to converse with for a few minutes total.

  • I can have a good time without attending any official events.

I did absolutely nothing official this year. If I hadn’t needed a badge to game on the third floor of the Hyatt and to get into the ENnies, and if I hadn’t felt the need to support GenCon, I wouldn’t have purchased a badge.

  • I am a good DM.

Every one of my games went very, very well. I was extremely nervous because with all the options available for games, I didn’t want anyone to feel like they wasted their time gaming with me. Luckily, I had really, really good players who were willing to be creative and laugh at the absurdity of their quests.

  • One day of recuperation is not enough.

I arrived home at midnight on Tuesday. I slept in late and barely left the house yesterday. Today, I am exhausted both mentally and physically. It’s going to be an early night tonight.

  • My son is awesome.

I was not sure how he would act since he’s only six and there would be so much going on. My worries were unfounded, though, and he was very good the entire time and had a ton of fun.

  • I can’t wait for next year.

I am already starting to plan for next year. There’s no way I could miss this.

So those are my lessons learned. Hopefully, those who have not been to GenCon before will see these and realize that they are missing out and really need to try to get there. You won’t regret it. :)

Absolutely. Both years, I’ve run a game that could fall horribly flat with the wrong players. Both years, I’ve had the right players.

Love the post! I am so glad Duncan was good. A few comments prior to and during the Con left me a bit nervous, but he was wonderful!

Dude you pay for my flight from Australia and I’m there. Unfortunately, GenCon Oz just ain’t THE GenCon.

@Brewdle – heh. Yeah, I imagine those are expensive.

Duncan was indeed awesome! I hung out with him a bit on Thursday and then bumped into him throughout the con at breakfasts and other events and just wandering through the lobby and he was never a problem. Bella adores him and every time she sees him in a GenCon pic she freaks out. Glad that bringing him seemed to work out!

And reveal – if you’re paying for people to fly from the South Pacific next year, I call dibs!

I don’t know about Midwest Airlines. I missed a connecting flight from Milwaukee to Indy because my flight out of Phoenix had a mechanical problem. The only flight they could get me on was 4 hours later, so instead of getting to Indy around 7, I got to my hotel at 12:30 am. And, on the way home, they lost my bag with most of my Gencon purchases in it for a couple days. This was the first time I’ve ever had either of those things happen.

On the other hand, their cookies WERE good.

I agree, there is never enough time. I’d have loved to play more RPGA, and to have made more of the seminars, but still had a blast with the games I did play. And one day of recuperation is definately not enough :)
