Perhaps they should have taken action against the individuals who illegally distributed (which they are) and the owners allowing copyright material to be posted using their software/site instead of pursuing actions against the entire community.

I dislike the fact that WoTC has made this “across-the-board” choice which limits everyone. I think it further proves that WoTC is not ready for the electronic age in a way that its customers want it to be.

I fail to see how this is a “no win situation” for WotC. If their intent happened to be protecting their new releases, I could see pulling the pdfs (it’s a damned stupid thing to do, bcause it won’t stop pirates, but whatever) –

But pulling all pdfs? Even the ones of OOP material that they could only be making a profit on the legal sales of?

That’s a damned stupid thing for WotC to do. Spiteful, and fiscally dense on top of that.

Not to be a WOtC apologist or anything... but it's really a no win situation. Do nothing, make it easier for people to rip off their stuff. Do something, piss off some of their customers. Personally... I wasn't buying the PDFs anyways, I prefer hardcopy, so this is largely a non-event for me. Do I think they are fabulous? No. Do I think they could use a little more customer empathy? @raineym – I disagree. With 3rd edition, they made every effort to be customer friendly by allowing other people to capitalize on their work via the OGL. By doing that, they did two things: 1) They ensured that their products (the PHB, DMG, and MM) would be purchased by someone who bought a 3rd party supplement and 2) They developed good will with their fanbase by saying “We know you love the products so we’re going to let you, the loyal fan, make your own stuff and sell it, legally, if you want.” That’s something you NEVER saw with any other company unless they were licensing out their product for a fee. To me, that’s the very definition of “customer-friendly.”
