I play it every year at GenCon, I have for the last three years running, and I can't wait to play it next year.
After that, from one to two, I meant to go to the RPG Bloggers Unite get together but I was... Napping time is a premium I have found and I needed to do it because come two o'clock I had FickleGM's On the Rocks game which was a drinking game for Star Wars. If you want to use a Force Point, add 1d6 to your roll, you had to take a shot. If you wanted to use a Destiny Point, basically automatically succeeding on what you're trying to do, you had to get everyone to take a shot. It was a little more subdued for our group. For his previous two games, everyone got rip-roaring drunk, but we didn't. We had a great time and he runs a very good game.
After that, we had the Nothingland dinner at Bucca di Beppo. If you don't know what Nothingland is, you're missing out. Kind of hard to explain. If you know what it is, you know what it is and it was very important to me and I'm really sad that it's gone. We have the dinner every year and Stacy (Whirligig) made these awesome crocheted Cthulu's. You can see them at the bottom of my "What I learned at GenCon" post. I was lucky to get one because she made one for everyone who RSVPed and said they were going to be there.
After dinner, we had a YMCA Dread game run by Cassander from CM. That was a lot of fun. It was a little less horrific than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be stuck in the YMCA, terrible things are happening, it was more of just a "let the characters do what they want." More of a day in the life. I really enjoyed it. I got to play the only non-gay character of the Village People who was also the lead singer and hopped up on cocaine the whole time.
The next day, we had a picnic for those who wanted to attend and I ran my second StuperPowers game. It was the game of the con for me. Sunday morning usually everybody is dragging butt. It's really late, we're tired, this thing's almost over. I had FickleGM, his wife, Nareau and Trillian (husband and wife), Truth Seeker, and Dire Wolf. They made Team Fail and it was fantastic. I don't think I have ever laughed that hard at a game. The powers they had, the way they used them, was just amazing. Had a heck of a lot of fun. It did involve partial nudity which involved one of the players taking off his shirt. He wanted to get rid of some levels of hurt so he did a truth or dare which involved taking off his shirt for the rest of the encounter. Without a second thought he said "ok" and took off the shirt. People were really into the spirit of it. It was the highlight of the con for me. It was my game and the best game of the con for me, so that made me really happy.
After that we had the Universe's Scooby Doo Dread game. It was a lot of fun. Kind of dragging on Sunday afternoon. Great mystery. I died for the first time in a Dread game as Fred. Hypersmurf's Scooby Doo is second to none.
After that we had some downtime and then went to dinner with at least fifty people to the Rock Bottom Brewery to catch up, have fun, talk to everyone, and say goodbye. After that, a bunch of us went out to see the Clone Wars movie. It was pretty good, I liked it. It really seemed to be more a kids movie to me. I know it's supposed to be the lead-in to the tv series, so I think the series will be geared more towards kids.
Basically went to bed, the next day went to lunch with the few of us left, then hopped a plane and came back.
For those bringing kids, I recommend looking at everything for them to do because there's a lot of it. He did Spiderwick, Pod Racing, Clay-o-Rama. Next year, we'll look earlier for what he can do. I forgot to mention that he helped pass out the awards at the ENnies. If you saw a kid with a blue mohawk, that was my son. We were extremely proud of him for that. That's really it. For those of you who have never been to GenCon, I highly recommend you go. You don't have to do anything official there. The last two years I've done True Dungeon but not this year. Lots of pickup games on ENWorld and Circus Maximus.
For the dealer's hall, I was there for 15 minutes total out of four days. I don't feel like I missed anything. That's not what I was there for. Don't get me wrong, the dealer's hall is fantastic and I love walking around it but, honestly, not much changes. The mystique kind of wore off of me this year. But it's definitely worth seeing and walking around. Some folks spend lots of money in it, some don't spend any. Something worth doing but don't feel obligated to do it.
As for the costs, it can be pretty darn cheap. Fly or drive, whichever is cheaper. Split rooms. Bring food or buy it at the grocery store there. Cheap places to eat around there; five or six bucks a meal. Embassy Suites had a free breakfast. You can go to GenCon on the cheap. You don't have to spend that much.
Thanks to everyone for viewing this if you've stuck around this long. If you're curious, my Scales of War adventure path starts this Saturday. The wiki has been updated with the last character to give me info. He's a monk using an "official" build that tweaks the ranger to make it more like a monk. Thanks and I'll talk to you later! Make sure to comment!
